Software piracy and development

According to various reviews and studies we are reading on the internet, it seems that piracy is related to the level of development of a country. The developing countries have highest rates of piracy (at least twice) that developed countries, especially when it comes to software piracy is concerned.

But what this relationship can occur between piracy and development? For me, economic factor is crucial. Having a high cost of licenses, fewer people can access them. In countries where people or firms have a higher purchasing power, will surely be more willing to pay for original programming.

But fewer licenses, fewer sources also mean fewer people working and investing in research programs. Why create original programs, if after the hack me and we can not profit from the creation of my work? Why create, if I can copy and free?

We also believe that this is due to culture and legal consciousness (or rather the lack thereof) of the inhabitants of a country. There are fewer penalties for those who violate intellectual property or trademark law, more people will be convinced that if pirated or counterfeit mark, nothing happens. Total anybody go to prison.

Personally, we find that a sentence of imprisonment for this type of behavior is ridiculous and unjustified, not the fine. Those who engage in such conduct, which will hurt them most is that the sanction with silver.

Then, summing up. We say that piracy occurs in larger scale in emerging economies, given the high costs of licenses, and because there is a culture or belief that hacking is not a crime, because almost no one is punished or penalized very little. O at least the latter is what “thinks” most people.

But there is also a structural flaw in the judicial system, which is responsible for investigating these crimes. Having an overloaded justice (as in Argentina) is logical that a judge investigating prioritize the most serious causes (including homicide, robbery qualified, etc.) Than those in which someone walks by selling cd “phony” through the local newspaper.

In summary, the high costs and lack of adherence to the rules (or at least some of them) by the inhabitants or the community at large would be two of the factors that explain, in a way, because the piracy rate is higher in developing countries.
